Helping Your Pet Recover

Post-Surgical Care

After spay/neuter surgery, your pet needs time and extra care to heal properly.
Instructions with rabies and spay/neuter certificates will be emailed to the address you provided when scheduling your appointment. Please review these thoroughly before coming to pick up your pet so you may ask any questions you may have at pickup.

Discharge Instructions

Picking Up Your Pet After Surgery

Discharge Process

Due to the volume of daily appointments and limited staff, the discharge process can take time. Please allow 30 minutes or more for the entire process. Please be courteous and patient with our volunteers and staff as they try to help all clients as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Packing

What To Bring

Please write your pet’s name and your last name (large and legibly) on a piece of paper and place it in your front window to help staff know who you are picking up.

Please bring your pet’s collar/harness/leash along so that your pet can be safely secured in your vehicle.

Parking

Where To GO

The spay/neuter clinic is located on the left side of the building. Please park in a parking space and remain in your vehicle for a staff member to come to you.

Staff will start the discharge process at the first parking space by the dumpsters and work their way up the parking lot, then go back to the beginning and start over again.

Picking Up

When To Arrive

Pick-up from surgery is 3:15 – 4:00 p.m. We DO NOT call. We will only call if there is a specific question or concern, so please arrive at the designated pickup time.

The clinic closes at 4 p.m. Please arrive on time for pickup. We are not equipped to board pets overnight, and it is not safe for them to be alone after surgery. It is imperative that you arrive on time. If you arrive after 4:00 p.m., you will be charged a $25 late fee per pet.

Courtesy Follow-Up Care

Rechecks

If your pet requires follow-up care related to their procedure/incision, we offer courtesy rechecks.
The clinic is open for rechecks Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; no appointment is necessary. Ring the doorbell at the spay/neuter clinic door for assistance. There is no charge for the recheck unless medications are required.
For veterinary emergencies or follow-up concerns not related to your pet’s spay/neuter procedure, we recommend you contact your primary care veterinarian or a local animal emergency hospital.

Have A Question?

Post-Surgical FAQs

For your convenience, we have put together some of the most commonly asked questions about post-surgical care. Of course, if you have a question not covered here, please feel free to contact us.
Will my pet go home with pain medications?

All pets go home with pain medication and an e-collar. There is no additional cost for the medication and e-collar.

What is the green mark by the incision / belly button?

Each pet receives a green scoring tattoo. This tattoo is a universal indicator that the pet has been spayed/neutered. It is not an option to decline this service.

What if my pet’s incision needs a recheck?

If your pet has recently had surgery at our clinic and requires follow-up care related to their procedure, please stop by the clinic Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. with no appointment necessary. There is no charge for the recheck unless we send home additional medications.

For veterinary emergencies or follow-up concerns not related to your pet’s spay/neuter procedure, we recommend you contact your primary care veterinarian or a local animal emergency hospital.

If you have brought a cat in through the TNR program and you feel that the cat needs a recheck, you can bring the cat to the clinic Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM to 8:30 a.m. in a humane trap. You will need to sign the cat in just as you did previously, and there is a $20 fee for us to re-sedate the cat and look at the incision. Pick up would then be the following day 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.

Spay It Forward

You can help improve the quality of life of animals throughout our community.
Donations to the Spay It Forward fund offset the costs of surgeries and allow us to offer drastically reduced fees for feral cats and York County pit bulls. These services are a vital part of reducing pet overpopulation and managing community cats.
